Arnesby's Churches

Shearsby Road Sign
St Peter's Church, Arnesby

St Peter's ChurchSt Peter's is one of six churches in the Parish, the others being St Mary Magdalene at Shearsby, St Mary at Bruntingthorpe, All Saints at Thedddingworth, St Nicholas at Mowsley and Knaptoft and All Saints at Husbands Bosworth. The is currently (August 2006) no Priest-in-Charge of the Parish.

St Peter's is basically Norman with the two central arcades being early 12th century. The chancel, south and north aisles and the embattled west tower are early 14th century. There are five bells, four of them were made in Leicester and hung in the tower in 1624. Three of these are inscribed with loyal and religious messages, the fourth says "If you are unwilling to come when I call, to church you will never wish to come at all".     There are a number of stained windows in memory of notable citizens, the earliest being in the south aisle for John Loseby who died in 1669.

In 1906 the vicar, the Reverend H E Whinfield died and a new clock and treble bell were given to the church by his family. The clock uses all 5 bells for it's chiming and striking.

The Church is undergoing a program of repair and restoration to which the May Fayre contributes. To see a selection of photographs of the church, some showing restoration work that has taken place, click here.
